Question in Engine & Sump Compatability
Can anybody tell me if the block and sump size is the the same of differs between models of Golf.
I.e. If I have a 1.5GX and a 1.8 GTI would the over all size and positioning of the engine block and sump be the same?
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks

Small blocks? No idea, probably the same (as each other, but not big block engines) though.

I as far as I can tell, I would need to make one for (in order of engine popularity)
- MK2 / KR + 9A
- MK3 / ABF
- MK1 / Range of Engines
- MK1 Caddy / TBC
As for mounting them, I need to stick my head under a car and work out the easiest way.

after some thinking on this i had an idea that the change was due to the fitment of hydralic tappets, though it could just be a coincidence
personally i would just make one to fit with the bigger sump, then it'll go on all of the big block mk1s no matter what. dont think there is much in it clearance wise really

I understand that the sump is the same but the sump is attached to the block.
If the block changes then it will alter the over all position of the sump in relation to the floor.
Because the block is different between the MK1's and 2's, then I figured that we would need a sump for each vehicle. Same goes for the ABF engine.
Further to that, the points in which I will be able to fix the sump guard to will differ between the MK1 and MK2 models.
Your right about the lack of clearence. It needs to fit as close to the sump as possible without touching it. If it touches and take an impact, the energy will travel right to the sump and it could crack.
It needs to be designed using a material that is soft (so it can take the impact and absorb the energy). Also so that when it is impacted, it has a suitable way to travel before hitting the sump.
I am looking forward to this project.
To the GX!

the 2.0 8v/16v are tall blocks but the difference is up top, not underneath.
abf has an alloy sump so this will change a bit in relation to your guard so it might be worth seeking one out to check. or you could just make it fit big block with big sump, and say if you have an abf you might need to put a tin sump on it!
as i say though, if i were you i would make the guard fit a mk1 with a big sump on it, then it will fit just about any big block combo in a mk1, same with mk2
