puttin a mk2 8valve GTi engine into my driver...

Hi guys ive tried searching but to no avail :( does anyone know of a guide to fitting a mk2 8valve gti engine into a mk1 small block shell?
I know you need to swap the engine mount but I need to know exactly where this is done, also i have the loom for the engine so thats should be okay but does anyone know if the fuel pump will fit into my fuel tank? also what driveshafts would be used? i will be using the 8valve Gti gearbox. Any other common problems would be great if anyone has any info!

any help would be greatley appreciated!

many thanks! Mike.

I recently done this on my mk1 , cut the camblet side mount of carefully , get 9mm spot weld drill bit , and then bolt it to the engine mount, bolt down the other 3 mounts and then move the engine  until it buts up njce against the chassis give it a quick spot weld remove engine then weld it up fully
You will need
Mk1 1.5-1.8 engine mounts all 4!
Mk1 5 speed gear linkage
New steering rack as it has the mount for the gear linkage

Im not sure on the fueling side as i blanked the injectors off and run a carb and i have my fuel pump on the blocki

Hope this helps

I converted my 1.3 to a kr 16v. You will need to either fit a gti fuel tank and external fuel pump and accumulater. Or find what is called a lift pump. these are found in Golf gti cabriolets or mk3 polo coupes with fuel injection. You need to install the lift pump into your existing 1.3 fuel tank, run a power feed to it and thats it. it just replaces the old sender unit underneath your rear seat ( its quite straight foreward, and thats the route I have gone down). You will still need an external gti fuel pump and a fuel accumulater whichever option you choose, but the lift pump feeds the external fuel pump as the non gti fuel tanks are not gravity fed, thats why you need the lift pump. Hope this helps

based on a reply from 6 years ago….

This gets asked a lot. It's not impossible but requires lots of time effort and money. Its much more involved than simply dropping in the new lump.

Things that will need changing;
If you are starting with a small block (1100/1300 engine) the drivers side mount needs relocating on the chassis leg. This involves cutting, grinding and welding.

The fuel supply is different from carburettor models. You will need the fuel pump, accumulator, tank, pipe work and all the bracketery from a donor GTI.

Engine electrics are different, you will need parts from a donor car (relays etc)

The exhaust is different (very different if starting from a small block car)

The gearbox will be totally different if starting from a small block car and will have the wrong ratios if starting from a big block car.

The steering rack is different if starting from a small block car.

The gear linkage is different if starting from a small block car

The clutch cable is different if starting from a small block car

The accelerator cable is different

The cooling plumbing will be different (more different if starting with a small block car??)

Things that should be changed
The GTI had up rated brakes and suspension that the original carb model won't have.

Other things
The GTI had sports seat (easy to upgrade) and black headlining (difficult to upgrade)
It still won't be a genuine GTI when you come to sell it and may cause difficulties with insurance companys as you will have a modified car.

If you are using a later Cabriolet GTI as a donor there are lots of detail changes like different electrical connectors from the earlier tintops. Similarly with a MKII GTI donor, plus it has a different gearbox mount, induction plumbing and fuel pump arrangement, i.e. only the basic engine block will be of any use. Later Digipants MKIIs will be an additional heap of pain

The only time I can think this is really feasible is if you have a mint rust free carb model and a GTI with good mechanics and interior but totally rotten body. If you are going to do it its probably slightly easier starting with a big block car.

And its not like there aren't any genuine GTIs for sale at reasonable £.

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

right, thats a pretty depressing way of looking at it in my eyes, i more than likely will be going bike carbs, the gear linkage and all the big block bits are not a problem as i have acsess to a fair few mk1 big block cars.

anyone have any idea about driveshafts?

You will need the drive shafts from a Mk1 big block car but your front hubs will be fine.

Oh one more thing... Exhaust manifolds... Can a normal GTi mk1 one fit or the mk2gti one?

use mk1 gti, get 6 bolt flange if at all possible. you'll want rest of system from 1.5-1.8 mk1 as well
