Is the coolant on the max in the bottle?
How quick does it do it?
Does the coolant push past the pressure cap?
More info pls!

My temp gauge kept on going off the scale at random a while back after doing some engine work, but the engine wasn't actually hot. Figured out that it was the temp sensor shorting out on the metal fuel lines going to the Warm-up regulator. Just made sure they didn't touch. Sorted.
Just an idea for ya

mine gets hot too, a 1.6gli cab. tan coloured water breaches the pressure cap, but when the fan kicks in the temp drops. is this ok or time to panic??

1.8 GTi Mines doing the random gauge thing too. Also the car gets hot so quickly, according to my gauge (when is works properly). Literally after about 2 miles my gauge is half way.
Then in traffic when the engines really hot the car stalls and wont start for a couple of mins, then it's fine again for a while before stalling (but only in traffic). Help please!!!

Sounds like thermostat to me.
Mine gets hot when in traffic, so i tried a new thermostat from halfords. It was then hot all the time traffic or not. Tried another to make it wasn't just a dodgy one. The same. So i have just put the original one back in.
I have a 2l mk3 bottom end. Don't think this is the issue because it runs too cold without thermo in. Does anybody know of a particular thrmostat that works better, and where i can get one.
Cheers
