miss fire issue - could it be the coil ?

Hi all,

I have a running issue with my 83 GTI, in past few weeks its developed a miss fire.

Between 2 -3 rpm she hesitates also the idle is very erattic. I have swapped over leads plugs, rotary arm, starter cap etc with no effect.

I suspect the coil as this is one of the only original parts left in the bay - could a faulty one give these symptoms ?

Try finding the wire that feeds the coil using a multimeter set on range 0-50 Volts when the ignition is turned on - and has no voltage when the ignition is turned off.

Disconnect it from the coil and replace with a length of wire (fitted with a spade connector at each end) from that coil terminal to the positive battery post. You now have a constant feed to the ignition.  Start the car and do your rev check to see if you still have your misfire.

If all is OK then you have a fault in your ignition circuit - probably a loose connection somewhere which goes open circuit, maybe due to egine vibration etc.  If the misfire remains then you'll have to check your fuel system.

After this test If you turn off the igntion at the switch, the engine will keep running…disconnect the wire from your battery post and it will stop!  Remove the wire and reconnect the proper feed wire to your coil.

make sure you unplug the right spade, as one of them is the power to the TCI unit. you're better off leaving the wires on there and use the spare 3rd terminal for your tests
