Formatting disaster!! , I'll try again.

Hi

Does anyone know where I can get an earlier lower timing belt cover for a 1.8 mk1 GTI?

Mine is missing and I'm struggling to find anything but the later ones.

Also, what is the best gear selector kit to get?
Just the bushes or the rods too?

Cheers
Simon

Is that the same one as the picture on VW Heritage under that number?

If so isn't this the later type?

The extension on it fouls with the engine mounting and it doesn't mate to the upper timing cover correctly.

No the picture shows the later type. This one doesn't fit.

the part number is the one VW list for an 83 gti, so if it doesnt fit you'll have to modify it!

that part is listed from 79-88 golf, then after that they switched to a different one that fits the plastic upper timing belt cover.

however, are you sure the later ones dont fit? because AFAIK they still do! the shape of them is square at the back specifically so it goes around the MK1 engine mount. Late cabrio and scirocco use the plastic timing belt covers and they dont have any issues. However MK3 timing belt covers dont fit without modification because they dont have the square cutout for the mount.

My KR engine fitted straight into my mk1 with no modification of the belt covers

There definitely seem to be two different lower timing belt covers available, the one pictured does clash with the engine mount and also doesn't fit into the top cover properly.

If you search under that part number, there is also this one pictured on a german site, I believe this is the correct cover :

golf2parts.de

However I haven't found it in the UK yet.

order it from VW, it should fit. this is the only number they list for the mk1 engine ;)

the german link is for a 'mk2 golf' one, so that shows they do fit ;) though it looks to me light the rear section is snapped off! they all should have that back section, it sits above the rear mount and seals off the rear of the timing belt properly. without it you'll have a gap!

there are 2 setups of toothed belt cover yes, the early one with metal cover which is fitted up to 1988, then the mk1 cabrio, scirocco and mk2 golf switched to a plastic toothed belt cover setup. All the sections are different lower, upper and metal inner.

I dont see how the late setup can be an issue in a MK1, because the cabrio and scirocco also use it!

early type: (049109175)

late type: (026109175a)

but like i say, the back of the lower cover is square shaped specifically to clear the mk1 engine mount, even on MK2 engines! The fact yours hits means something is wrong.

Can just about make out the upper square section of the cover here: (post-87 type covers, plastic)

When you tighten up the cam belt tensioner which way did you turn it, you can seem to tension it both ways but cant fit the back cover on when you tenstion it the wrong way. This happened to me once when I could not get the cover back on.

1988 Mk1 Golf GTi Cabriolet 1.8cc DX, K-jet. Daily drive. 317,000 miles and counting
1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

good point! you need to tension it clockwise, or upwards :)

Yeah, I ran into that problem when I did my brothers cambelt on his mk 2 so I'm sure that I tensioned it the right way.

Its almost the same cover just a slight difference in the top where the top cover meets and the retaining bolt goes through the side. I had to make a little mod to get one on mine.
