ignition timing on 2ltr audi 8v ????? (HELP)

can anyone tell me how to set mine up properly in detail i.e where the marks are etc ??? engine was hunting so i tweaked distibutor a little bit then it started pinking so i placed it back to its original setting but it dont seem to be as quick on acceleration as it was ??? and its hunting again (revs are fluctuating) i,d be gratefull for any help on this cheers stu

Stu, with mine, i advanced the timing till it began pinking then knocked it back very slightly. If you use RON98(Optimax) the ignition timing will be able to advance *a lot* more!

What head/cam have you got?

I've got a Pack D on mine with a 308 cam. It's running 20 degrees timing without pinking. At about 22 degrees it pinks like a beatch.

As most MK1 GTIs do, in heavy traffic pulling away, it pinks very slightly for a split second but then goes away.

I've got a Kent GS2(290 degree) i want rid off if you're interested? Or anyone else for that matter.
