Identifying this engine

Suspected South African engine but unsure
I hope someone can help.
I have acquired an unused crate engine from my brother-in-law, but I'm unsure of the exact specification. He bought it many years ago for a project that never started, and it has now passed to me to use in my MK1 rebuild.
There is no engine code on the block (does not appear it was ever stamped), but he suggests it is a 2L unit from South Africa. The head is certainly from Mexico with a date stamp of 17/10/98 and a part number 026.103.373 AA, which I believe is hydraulic lifters, but this is listed for the 1.8L.
Before I decide to put it in the car it would be nice to know more about it.
