Humming noise then stalls leaving impossible to start again

Hi

I can't seem to drive my car more than 5 miles without it breaking down. It gets warm makes a humming vibrating noise from behind the dash then stalls leaving it impossible to start again unless cold. If i do get it going again it splutters sometimes only on a couple or few cylinders and runs quite rough. Coughing and jerking and will not idle.

I've changed plugs, filter, relay, leads, cap and rotor including the cold start valve on the off chance i guess but still no joy.

Does anyone no what i'm talking about and hopefully not in a unkind manor but experiencing the same problems so as i don't feel alone and we can sort this out lol

Is this a 1.8 GTi injection ?

yes it is. Its an 86  dx engine code 1.8 8v injection…

ypu sure the humminmg noise is coming from behind the dash and not the fuel pump or accumlator?

na my pump seems to be working fine and i've had my garage mate check it out too and he's said it should be fine. The accumulator tho i'm not sure. Is that mounted anywhere near the front of the car? Its definately coming from the from of the car behind the engine.

when i get the noise the car seems to run lean  if that means anything

accumulator is at the back alongside the fuel pump … don't know on this one
