It does sound like fuel starvation, check the fuel lines from pump to the engine bay for blockages.

There is a good injector test >>HERE<<

Are your fuel filters clean? Have you any debris in the fuel tank?  Is your filler neck in good order?

Fires need 3 things to burn properly - fuel, air and a source of ignition.  Your engine is no different.

Have you checked the coil?  I drove to an MOT one day but couldn't drive back - the coil just packed in, and gave symptoms much as you describe.  The Bosch ones seem to work best.  Some of the alternatives are really poor quality and don't last.  If the ignition module isn't clamped to its heatsink properly it can overheat and give a misfire, but it would take quite a while to get hot.

I knew someone who overtightened the air tube jubie clips from the metering head to the inlet manifold which distorted the tube and let stray air into the engine.  That will make it run rough too.  Did you have to adjust the mixture to get it to idle ok?

Good luck - Big
