Can anyone tell me how much a full engine rebuild should cost, including taking it out and re-fit.
I've had quotes from £2000 to £1100
its the standard 1.8 8 valve injection DX

Its like asking how long is a piece of string…
How many miles has your car done? Is it burning oil? How old is the engine?
Untill its out of the car and you look inside its hard to tell what needs doing and replacing so thats is why the prices/quotes vary so much.

I would be tempted to go to TSR for one of these at those sort of prices:

Bit of extra performance and your old engine in exchange (you might be able to get them to use your old block if you want to keep the numbers right).

The quotes I had are for a full rebuild, I've spoken to TSR and the donnington engine sounds good espeicially since it has a gas flowed head
but they want £500 to take out my engine and re-fit which I think is a bit steep.
I'm just waiting for a quote from Jabbasport and then I will make a decision.
Thanks for the help

tbh I don't think £500 for engine out, new one in is too bad when you think about all the labour involved
Have you got any mates with an engine hoist who can lend a hand, it's not all that hard - just nuts and bolts

I was thinking the same thing - you'll also be buying some aftersales service and a warranty if they do the fit too, but I guess it all starts to add up doesn't it?

You wont get much for 1100 quid…it should cost around £600 minimum to strip and build if its done correctly…poss a little more…plus parts and sundries…plus fitting…clutch?
Engine out and back in for labour should be around £400….maybe a bit less but not much.
It's surprising how all the small bits add up…be carefull…the basic price maynot include sundries…oil, anti freeze, hose clips, breathers cleaned out or replaced, tappets re shimmed…shims…gaskets etc…make sure yr quote includes all that if your having it fitted.
