Engine mount bush replacement

Post

Ordered a new geabox mount bush as it was worn out, only the new one will not fit!!

Says the new bush is 64.7mm but the internal distance in the gearbox mount is 63.5mm. Its not bent or warped.

I get that its an interference fit so its jammed in tight but how on earth is that supposed to press in?! I cant even get it started in the mount, even in a vice or a press.

Any help appreciated. I have the drivers side bush en route also

I didn't measure mine, but what I can say is that my local garage had some fun trying to put them in with a hydraulic press. They are tight.

Put the mount in a cooler, and place 5 lbs of dry-ice on it for about 2-3 hours.

Get a board 2X10X 2foot. Drill a hole in it the same size as your mount center.

Fill a 5 gallon bucket with 3/4 water.

Take your mount bracket and heat it up Cherry Red.

Holding the mount with a vice grip place it on the board, quickly take the Dry ice and place it in the bucket.  Take the mount out of the cooler and orient it, and place it in the mount bracket, and one smack or two with a hammer will move it in place, quickly quench it quick in the bucket of dry-ice water.

Been doing it that way for years.

Tight to say the least!

Im tempted to just cut a slot in the mount where the bush fits, expand it a millimetre or two. Slide the bush in and then run a seam weld back along it whilst its clamped tight in a vice.

The drivers side bush comes tomorrow, will see how that compares in its mount!

I have fitted one or 2 of these over the years,  i do have the use of a hydraulic press. They are tight but i dont remember one looking too big to fit,  perhaps you have one from a rogue batch,  not to spec.. Be careful with heat  dont want the rubber to go soft…

I have a big hydraulic press at work too, which will do the job but the bush wont sit true and square on the sleeve for it to start. The press is caged off so you can't tweek as you apply pressure.

The bushes arent expensive, might buy another and compare

That was definately one of the issues my chaps had - but they could get in and tweak.
As you say though, the bush shouldn't really measure more than the housing.
