Engine Help Will it fit and wat do i need! please help

Right so after taking the dash out the car i figure why not just see if the engine will turn over, and i get nothing! :dontknow:

So i think to my self why not get a newer bigger less mileage engine instead of messing with the other one!

So the car is a 1981 1.6 gti, and was wondering if the 1.8 8v out a mk2 would fit straight in on the original engine mounts, and would all the electric connectors fit the mk1's dials and switches in the dash?

I have read threw loads of engine swap threads but cant seem to find one that relates to my situation! So any help woul;d be appreciated!

If the mk2 1.8 dont fit i take it that the mk1 1.8 gti block and gearbox woul;d be quite a straight forward swap? or am i wrong?

cheers

Swapping 1600 to 1800 is trivially easy. If you keep the 1600 gearbox, then there will be no different wiring to worry about (the 1800 might have had a different reverse light switch, for the MFA), although you might need to swap over oil pressure, temp sensors if you have extra gauges fitted. The only other part to worry about is the top rad hose, which is slightly different (use the 1800 item with the 1800 engine).

Since its out of a Mk2 you'll need to unbolt the engine mount from the 1600 block and transfer it to the 1800; and the inlet & exhaust manifolds (so that means gear up with new gaskets). I think the only other difference is the 1800 dizzy might have 2x vacuum connections. whether you swap the dizzy over too, or connect up the 2nd vac hose, is up to you.

Detail differences are that the 1800 metering head is different to the 1600 one, and so is the exhaust back box; and the gear ratios are slightly different. But you're getting the best of both worlds by using the 1600 box and metering head on an 1800 motor.

So if i find myself a good mk1 1.8 8v engine i only need to alter the top rad hose and thats that? Sorry if i sound dumb but its my first project car and not to good on the engine front!
Also whats the MFA ?

cheers

Yep, Mk1 1800 would mean only the rad hose. Also beware there's 2 styles of exhaust manifold, one of them has 6 bolts, the other has 2x C clips. So you might need to swap the exhaust manifold too (but inlet will be okay. Mk2 would mean rad hose + engine mount + both manifolds to swap.

MFA is the trip computer on the dashboard, it has a 6 pin switch on the gearbox instead of the 1600's 2 pin one.
