Engine dies whenever I press the accelerator (open throttle)
As per the subject, car seems to start fine after a few attempts, once running it idles well.. but the second I touch the accelerator, the engine runs lumpy and then eventually cuts out.
I also noticed the plastic top section of the airbox kind of squash (collapse slightly) looks like it is fighting for air as i open the throttle, as if its having difficulty getting air through the filter. Filters fine and pipes don't seem to be blocked anywhere obvious..
Any idea's?

that's what makes it sounds like the sensor plate

I agree with you wooders I ve just had exactly the same trouble, icleaned and re set the sensor plate as shown in haynes manual but was no better, in the end i got second hand fuel metering head unit (?50) and that cured it. Together with new injectors and fuel filter it goes like S**T off a S****Lwooders said

So gone through the motions on fuel flow, which is now working fine.
Not sure how to clean and reset the sensor plate? I need to purchase a haynes manual as I gather these are very useful with general maintenance.
I did try swopping the metering head, the result of which was a louding whining noise when I turned the engine over and car never even started. So I replaced it back with the one that does work, i.e. car starts.
Any info appreciated. Thanks

Anyway not had a chance to progress unfortuantley, I am not sure about the reset sensor plate thing, as i am not sure what this is.
Probably over the this weekend I am going to dismantle the noisey metering head and see if I can get it to work or atleast understand the workings..

Metering head progress....
Both metering heads have different symptons for problem.
one over fuels and car struggles to turn/start at all, removal of fuel pump relay fuse stops over fueling and turn the key to get the car to start for a couple of seconds, before it runs out of gas to burn.
the other metering head does not give enough fuel as the engine tries to spark every few turns of the engine but doesn't quiet get there..
I have dismantled both metering heads and on the underneath of one, the pin in the middle is petruding 4mm (over fueling metering head) and the other is petruding about 10mm (starving metering head).
Both pins do not move, should they? I am sourcing a metering head at the moment. Also I read some articles advising specific metering heads for specific cars, i.e. eg engine number? Any thoughts please..
Thanks in advance.

By the looks of it the pin is called a "Control Plunger" and should move in/out…
