DX Engine Rebuild
I've got an injection DX engine and want to rebuild it. However i've been told it may be a little more worn than i thought meaning its not a case of cleaning and fitting new rings and seals. What are the possibilities when it comes to reboring? Are cylinder liners an option? I know alot of people may think this is a mega effort but i dont really want to put bigger better engines in. Another option is a new block but where can you buy these?

Have you taken it apart yet?
i took a 125K lump apart and the bores were perfect!
Only way is to look!

Yeh the heads off and the issue thats got me thinking is that i can move the pistons side to side.

pistons should move!
at the top of the bore is there a ridge (approx 10mm down) if so how deep?
The other thing is to buy a set of rings and see what your clearance is

I know there should be some movement side to side but i am concerned that these pistons can move excessivly. There is a lip approx 5mm down the bore and this varies depending on which cylinder it is. The lip is inconsistant and can seem like hardly anything to a noticeable ridge as much as maybe a layer of paint. I'm going to take it to get properly measured at a machine shop but i was wondering what my options were if they say it is too worn to simply fit over-sized rings.

You don't get oversize rings, if it's that worn then it will need a re-bore and new pistons fitted (next size up)

c&r enterprises and got a 2ltr crank so with a rebore and some clearance work its gonna be a 2ltr but still look stock

the next oversize will be about 0.5mm greater than your current bore.
although you could fit 83mm pistons to take it from 1781cc to 1870cc (1.9) which is what i'll be doing with my G60.
alternatively, there is the audi 3A 2l bottom end conversion, details can be found here: http://www.vwgolfmk1.o…ontent&pa=showpage&pid=39
which would work out cheaper than buying new pistons for your 1.8. but if you were to get the 3A block and then find that it needs new pistons, you're back to square one.
