cutting out problem...

Hi
I'm having problems with my gti cutting out. The symptoms are:

car runs fine too and from work every day 2-3 miles
take it out on a run & it  cuts out (although not every time)
turns over fine. but will not fire
take lead off distributor cap and no spark
leave it for half an hour(ish) starts up no problem

I fitted a new coil at the weekend and took it out on a run no problems
Went for a spin tonight and it cut out again. Waited 30 mins. & started

Can anybody help ?. Any ideas would be much appreciated

Could be anything , but it sounds electrical i'd start at the ignition switch , these can cause the symptoms you descibe , also can you hear the pump running when you try to restart it ?.

Brother had a similar problem on a mk2, he changed just about everything possible… In the end it was because the ignition module wasn't earthed to the car properly.  So make sure the cage is bolted to the car properly, it might (fingers crossed) save you a lot of time and money…

thanks
You can hear the pump running when trying to restart

I'm borrowing an ignition module tonight to see if it helps.

please keep the suggestions coming in just in case this doesn't work!

Although the ignition switch does sound another potential option
Cheers guys

It wasn't a faulty ignition module in my bro's case, it was just that the cage its screwed to wasn't bolted to the car properly.  Hope you find a fix mate.

dizzy

Mertle I had exact same problem turned out to be the hall sender in dizzy.  I also replaced coil, ignition module, wiring etc…  Same as you got me to work everyday 2 miles but on longer runs it would die, tacho drop to zero instantly.  Sometimes it would start again straight away, but sometimes I would have to leave it for 20 mins then it would run.

Your other post asked if there would still be a spark.  The hall sender sends a signal to the ignition module which controls the coil producing the spark at the right timings. No signal no spark. Broken or breaking down hall sender, no spark.

Heres my post

Hope it is your module as new dizzy ?130.

Thanks for all replies.

Seem to have sorted the problem. A friend of mine noticed the small three pinned connector going to the dizzy body was shall we say knackered. He replaced the connector & stuck on a dizzy he had got already for good luck and no problems. He suspects a combination of the two…anyway went to Harewood hill climb on Sunday & no problems what so ever.Even the oil warning buzzer didn't go off so it might have cured this too…!?

Thanks for feedback
Cheers
