Blowing manifold due to snapped bolt

Post

Hello all, I've got quite a blow on my manifold which is a 4-2-1 sport manifold. I chucked my phone behind the inlet manifold and I got a good picture of the snapped bolt.

So from the front of the car it's the second tube from the left and it's the top bolt, it couldn't be in a worse position.

Any ideas on how to get at this? I've got zero visibility, huge hands and I'm rubbish at this stuff.

So gutted it couldn't be a more annoying issue.

Been there myself, and I ended up taking the head off to a Machinist, he remove the bolt and heli-coiled the head, only 2 differences I had 3 bolts that torque sheared.

I when back with SS bolts using never sieze, the bolts I used had a Driver head, they were off a Saturn SL1.

They never broke again…
I still used new copper nuts.  and the external threads of the studs got never-seized as well.

I am a good guy with a Left-Handed drill, but on a head I took the "chicken" route….

It's not a bolt which has broken off it's a stud, you may be lucky and there will be some sticking out which you may be able to remove but you will need to remove the exhaust down pipe/manifold to get to it.
You may also find it easier to work on/get to if you remove the inlet manifold as well.
Sorry to say it's not a 5 minute job….

If you do remove the manifold/down pipe and use the original studs make sure you replace all the nuts for copper ones.

GSF and Euro car parts did sell them or you can get them from ebay

Or you can up grade as the post above.

4-2-1 mainfolds are not the easiest to get off, I've done it with a standard exhaust manifold but after upgrading to a 4-2-1 last summer I would not want to remove it again!

If you do get it done at a garage and they remove the inlet manifold it may be worth getting them to check the bolts as looking at your picture the bolt head looks as if it's starting to round off?

Getting them off intact usually requires a 3 day spray of penetrating oil then slighty running the engine to expand the metals about 2 minutes, then a Good 6pt Socket and a air impact tool.

My machinist said that on VW's Mk1's they used a 8m stud, and if they had gone to a 10 or 12 stud thes kinds of things wouldn't of happened.

I guess I was lucky that I got my g60 4-2 manifold at a breakers that was already off the car  :)… the one I ordered from TT Tuning, as about 180 dollars, the breakers was but 15.
