airbox on wrong side

I have just bought a mk1 for the track, the airbox is on the drivers side, i thought it should be on the side of the battery, or could it be different on the series1? i am thinking maybe early mk2 kjet?

All Mk1 EG/DX engine GTI's had the airbox on the passenger side. Mk2 1.8 GTI engines had the airbiox on the driver's side and a revised inlet manifold.

Thanks Mark
Is that a good thing for the car, as i am going to use it as a track car?

yes, as you can feed cold air throught the headlight hole, as the battery is not in the way.

Engine is essentially the same as the mk1 GTI engine in terms of power and performance. As wooders say air intake is better suited to take advantage of removing headlight for greater air flow.

I have been looking for the engine code, i found the engine number on the top right hand corner of the bottom end, but how do i find the engine code?.

Engine code should be on front/middle of the engine block.
