9A alternator bracket(s)

Post

Which do I need?

I have a 9A engine which I bought in many pieces, it has the alternator but no brackets to hold it on

I've been trying to work out exactly which brackets I need because there seems to be quite a few variations but I'm not sure

Could anyone shed any light please?

The car won't have aircon or power steering

Thanks
Dan

depends on the alternator you have as the brackets are different,

the non power steering mk3 age one with a serp belt that has a spring on the bottom is the one im using on my abf, bracket.jpg

this lowers the alternator, usefull if using carbs

kr or 9a manual steering ideally if you want to go with the 9a alternator setup, the pas one will work too just much bigger as it has a bracket for the pump cast in. you can just chop that off tho ;)

if you want to go mk3 setup you need a mk3 16v abf crank pulley, apart from that its easy as all the other bits are the same as 1.8-2.0 8v mk3

So I'm still struggling with this on and off and it's getting fairly frustrating now

I rang up a scrappy and asked for a non-PAS mk3 bracket and alternator and got sent these (the 2 on the right):

Whatever they are?!!

That bracket won't fit because it hits the central coolant pipe plus its ugly so I don't want to use it anyway.

So then I thought I'll keep it simple and go for the bracket it lists for the car on ETKA (the one on the left)

Now the only alternator that appears to fit that is the centre one in the pic but that properly fouls the carbs, I mean there's no chance of that fitting and getting the adjuster arm anywhere near the alternator. PLUS that bracket doesn't seem to sit flush over the water pump even if the alternator did fit!

So I'm back to looking for the one that sporttrucker posted a picture of I guess. So does anyone have actual part numbers for that bracket, the crankshaft pulley and presumably the water pump pulley I need please please please. I've looked through ETKA about 100 times already :'(

I think a major part of this problem is the fact I had absolutely nothing to begin with. No bolts, brackets or anything remotely helpful!

This is where I'm at:

The non-flushness:

The bolts that I had securing the water pump:

And I'm guessing I won't need an adjuster arm up top if the spring is on the bottom?

Any help would be MUCHLY appreciated

sorry think its a non aircon mount I put a pic of.

you should go to the scrapyard yourself I picked a complete bracket with alternator for £12.

you will need double ended bolts for the water pump

will get pics of my setup later, might have a spare mount

you also need the special bolt for top right corner

yes its the early non-ac version you need, with the big spring under it. You may find the 9a block has no fitting for the top right stud, I just left it off my kr

the one you got sent is for aircon, and all later non-ac cars as well. it would be ok if you had an abf front flange, but with the kr flange the tensioner spring pack gets in the way, plus i bet the carbs would fowl too

Thank you very much as well Rubjonny

I luckily came across someone breaking a whole car so I've got all the parts I need now, apart from the belt

I ordered one for the car that I bought the parts from but it's miles (not literally) too long

Which did you guys use can you remember?

Thanks again

Also as a side note, the crank pulley that I bought was like a double one with space for a v-belt on the outer part as well. I cut the v-belt part off as I couldn't actually fit the pulley with the engine in place, and plan to get it machined down so it's balanced. Would that cause any issues?
