Hi folks, i have bought an engine off mk1jim, picking it up on Saturday and  hope to fit this coming week .
Question is any thing or things i should do before turning the engine over or any parts to replace,
only from what Jim has told me its not been used for a long time any suggestion would be grateful

what do you know about the engine? cambelt is a good idea, maybe water and oil pump possibly? what sort of mileage and history do you have on it?

You can cause damage if everthing isn't a bit lubricaed on the engine.  Like wooders I'd replace all the belts, plugs, oil etc while it was out.  Don't know if it's the right process but I turned the key to the first position and back off again about four times to get fuel to the engine.  I then turned it over without actually firing it up.  This lubricates the engine.  Then…… cross your fingers and actually fire it up…. After it's heat up and everything check the exhaust gases are ok (sign of engine wear), check for leaks and leave some cardboard under it overnight.  Check that there's no engine oil on the cardboard and check inside the rocker cover for milky oil….. I'm no expert and this may be wrong but it's what I done when rebuilding mine.
