Is there enough fuel in the tank to prime the pump? have you disconnected the fuel pipe to the metering unit and checked that fuel can pass through it and that the return line is unblocked?
Have you taken the rubber pipe off the top of the metering unit, popped out the injectors and lifted the metering plate to see that they are actually able to spray fuel? (You will need to swap a normal relay for the fuel pump one to get it to run without the engine running) it does sound like the cold start injector is able to supply enough to make the engine run for a few seconds but there is nothing from the main injectors.
Another thing it could be is a major air leak somewhere, have you checked all your vacuum hoses and checked that any extra holes that should have pipes in have got pipes in? The flexible pipes on the metering unit and throttle bodies can sometimes split with age so do take them off and look!
Hope that helps a bit ;-)
