Mk1 golf
I want to keep the standard engine but was look and putting a free flowing exhaust and panel filter
What camshaft would people recommend as piper cams do a range of cams
Would a 320 deg cam be ok.

A 320 cam is full race, needing lots of additional parts to even begin to work, plus an engine spec to suit.
Free flow exhausts work well…look at Jetex for a sensible road option that will give a gain without masses of noise…5hp increase is the norm.
A drop in panel element…again from Jetex…it's cotton gauze just like a K&N, or a K&N itself…depends if you want a blue or red filter! Not massive gains but a fit and forget item, and it's cleanable so will last for years to come.
Further airflow increase can be had with a couple of holes cut into the bottom of the airbox and the inner wing side…I've seen 4hp back to back on the rolling road when doing that in the past.
For a largely standard engine apart from the above mods I'd use the BP270….276 duration 420 lift…work well as a road cam, though it would pay dividends to overhall the head at the same time, have 3-angle seats cut and blend them in with a skim to up the compression ratio to suit the cam…or even a full porting job to get the best from the whole package.
1800's make brilliant road engines, no real need to fit a 2ltr as more than enough road power is possible and keeping some originality.

Hi thanks for the information and how much bhp would i be looking at with those mods including the head work?

I've done road sport conversions on customers cars making 132hp and 130ibft of torque from a std 1800 bottom end, mild road head & 268 degree cam.

Around 130hp, more with full head work and a tubular manifold. The mid range pull will be strong which is more important than top end numbers for road use.

Sounds good and easy enough.
When you say a tubular manifold would it be a 4-2-1 or a 4-1
As there are a lot of different designs

None of the ones available on the market currently are ideal, but the 4-1 Ashley works well.
Ok thanks ill keep my eye out for any for sale.

Most of the 4-2-1's are a basic copy of the std cast manifold & downpipe and offer little improvement.
The other option is to port the std cast manifold for a couple hp gain…approx half what the Ashley will give…works ok for road use.
