WHITE SMOKE AND STRONG SMELL OF PETROL!!...

hi, just recently (not sure if its down to the cold weather) but when i start her up in the morning, shes blowing loads of white smoke out  :?

and also everytime i start her theres a strong smell of petrol in the car

also on tick over it seems slightly lumpy  :?

any suggestions on what it might be or what could be wrong

Does the smoke stop when the car's warmed up?

yea  

It's probably just burning off moisture, it's that time of year. Do you use it regularly? Are you losing coolant though? Not sure about the smell of petrol. Hopefully someone else can reply as the combination of the two may mean something else.

yea, its my daily driver so i use her a lot, ok thanks for that, i would take her to a garage but there all rubbish round here and havent got a clue with old cars!

Have u checked your fuel filter & filter neck and tank under your seat? mine were all knackered and my car stunk of petrol when started up till sorted all fuel issues, didnt allow anyone to smoke near it in case it blew up, just a suggestion im no mechanic im afraid

try removing back seat and undoing the cover plate that hides the fuel sender. on myn smell was greater if tank full as opposed to 1/4 full.

Check for any signs of petrol pooling around the sender, probably the lines not fixed correctly.

Or signs of fuel vapour escaping, normaly looks like a slight damp area, wipe away and comes back. if thats the case probably the oring needs replacing. or could try refitting existing one but they aint expensive and still available from stealer when i tried.

and then as suggested do you know the condition of the filler neck?

pic below shows the pooling clearly and you can see the vapour areas around the outside. As you can see some twonker used cable ties  

yea white smoke definately sounds like condensation which is normal. Also look out for any split petrol hose which it may be seeping out of.

The smell of petrol could also be a hole in the exhaust which could also account for the white steam coming out the tailpipe ie drawing in moisture
