How come yours is missing?
1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet
The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I bought the car for 50 euros (about 40 quid) as is, minus a cam.
Why the cam is missing i am not sure but i think the previous had tried to fit hydrolic tappets and may have snapped it. A full set of both types of tappets were in the boot.

Looks somthing like this 026103373 ??
Can work out what head you then have. Two types of head Hydo or Shim (Solid) types. You cant mix the two. Meaning you cant put Hydro lifters in a solid lifter head.
Ive not ETKA on this machine here so i cant look up the info for now.
Lets us know what you find

Cylinder Head
However a further inspection of the head leads me to believe that it may be US.
Having loosely placed the tappets shows that the valves are not all seated correctly as the tappets sit at different heights without a cam.
Surely they should be roughly the same and not seated with a difference of up to 10MM; therefore a new head may be my best option.
Therefore i ask if you may know if a different head can be fitted other than the 026 103 373, preferably with hyrolic tappets.
Many thanks. . . . .Phmac

U got this one!

Iam really sure thats a Solid lifter head, denoted with the letter "F". I also rekon its a 1.6L engine.EZ motor.
Good news and bad news. The bad first. Solid lifter heads need servicing very regular 10k miles with shim adjustments.I have looked into it and the tools, let alone the shims are exspensive. Not just that its a pain in the rear end to do.
Good news: You can put a Hydro lifter head on that block. Same head gasket 1.6 and 1.8 are all the same. Only difference was the compression ratio, so the bore stays the same. Thats good!
SO! here is the best bit, slap on a 1.8GTI head. Either from a DX engine K-Jet or a MK2 golf GTI digipants 1.8!
It will fit on your blocks no problem. Ahhhh you say my car is carbed! Easy workaround. Just block up the injector seats. 1P UK pennys are a perfect size! The exhaust / inlet manifold will bolt straight up!
The added bonus is. Hydo lifters, no worrys about doing them blasted shims anymore. GTI cam = Bit more power. If you use the digipants PB head, the valves are slightly bigger too. Better power!
Now your 1.6L GL model will rocket. almost a GT model..lol
Just another small note! I have done this mod! my self.!!!! hey hey hey
