URGENT help needed car wont start or run

broke down yesterday and the car wouldnt start for a while when it did it wasnt holding any revs and I couldnt move the car more then a few feet I ended up getting the AA out as I was on the A1 on my way to leeds on my own.
The AA man thought it was a problem with my Carb and turned the idle speed right up and I managed to make it the rest of the way to leeds.

Husband has had a play with today completly cleaned Carb out as far as we can tell these no crap in it.  put it back together again and the car was ildling fine so we took it for test drive but broke down and the about half mile up the road after car going juddery again.

The car now wont start and its as if theres no fuel getting through?

AS per my other posts Ive been having problems with the car juddering for about a week we changed the HT leads, Dizzy and rota arm last weekend but car has still been rough all week and we decided it must be the petrol Id got from tesco?  but Ive filled up at the BP twice since.

Do you think I need a new Carb??

Any Ideas?  :dontknow:

Car is a 1.5 with pieburg 1B3 carb on it.

have you checked the fuel filter, to see if there is any fuel geting to the carb?

Hello littlerolf,

Is the pump pumping fuel - you'll need to take the pipe off the carb, disconnect the HT lead at the coil, and then tun the engine over on the starter. Hold the pipe into a rag and you should get strong spurts of petrol - Please take care, No Sparks & No Smoking

Wonder if you have some rust particles floating around in the tank, blocking the alloy fuel pick up pipe. Plenty of posts on the subject of the dreaded fuel filler neck.

Just a thought!

MKone your post is winging its way too you, sorry for the delay chap!..

Thanks Mkone and satelliteone fuel is getting through ok carb is filling up and dispensing.
We are going to do the measurement tests this week to see if too much or too little fuel is coming out of carb.

When I tried to adjust the idle whilst it was running the idle screw did very little to the idle. does this mean the carb is worn??

Off road now so no longer a daily drive so I have some time to look at it and tweak.

Thanks for your help I will continue to update if I find the cure.

I recently had the same problem on a mk2 found the fault the expensive way. Fault developed as you described so went out & got a can of carb cleaner, sprayed all round the carb ?4.50. car ran fine ? mile later same fault, went out and got a weber carb ?240 (eurocarparts). Got home started striping off the old carb, notice a split in one of the vacuum hoses. Replaced the carb anyway. Found another large split in the brake servo vacuum hose only exposed when the carb was removed. I found the best way to check for vacuum leaks is spray carb cleaner around the base of the carb with the motor running and listen for drops in the revs. Not sure if yours has got the same carb set up as mine but worth while checking.

mpg & Response is a lot beter with the weber carb.

Little rolf - definetly make sure all your vacuum hoses are good first. I'm sure mark2driver is not the first to repalce a supposedly shot carb, when it was just a case of new vacuum hose. My mk2 has a Pierburg carb set-up and was a bit rough when I first got it. New vacuum hoses all round sorted it out.

The warm air nad vacuum feed  probably gets ignored ui ost servuicing and the hoses etc break up over time. You can get vacuum hose by the metre very cheaply from a parts factor, worth replacing all of it if you are trying to diagnose a problem.

He is running again

It was like the seen from frankenstein last night he is alive

running like a bag of nails but running none the less.

Changed the coil, cleaned up points, tested condensors swore a little got shocked by the coil plugged it back on and away he went. (Roughly)

Played with carb a little but it sounds like a high pitched sucking noise.

checked all of the vacuum hoses, good suction there. Going to replace manifold gasket and carb flange this weekend and service the carb with a kit. so hopefully he may be back on the road.

Last weekend the weather was great and I was being reminded that it would be great to be driving with roof down.  I did offer to chop the roof off the mk3 but she said no.

I will keep updating.  Thanks for all your help.
