unknown engine

i have a mk1 jetta with what i believe to be a 1.6 carb engine in it, The sticker in the boot has been painted over more times than i know of and is unreadable. i also cant find an engine code on the engine its self.
what can i do to find out my engine code? i have a vin number and an engine number which i found if that helps anyone

Dont have any paperwork it was bought as a project, Its an 88 and its a four door saloon. its not actually a jetta its badged as a fox cause its south african

Ok, I had a look at I can see hm and a load of numbers. so does that mean hm is the code?

HM does indeed come back as a 1.6 engine, looking at it post-96 so assum SA MK1 only. looking at it thought the block and head come back same part numbers as 1.6 EZ which is std mk2 golf, id assume it runs a different carb in SA though
