SCIROCCO 1.8 CARB, SPLUTTERING

Hi Lads, was wondering if anyone might know whats going on here?, Friend of mine has his 1.8 1992 scirocco in my shed for approx 1 1/2 years now (thats when he bought it) & has decided to get it up and running, we spent yesterday at the car got it starting and went for a quick test run, found that the car was spluttering and cutting out when you give it a bit of holly so brought it back to the shed
for a look, found that the inline fuel filter was very dirty, air filter very dirty, rubber carb mount was broken/cracked completely in 2 pieces and the rotor arm and distributor cap didnt look the best, off to the motorfactors with us and got some parts,
(we were fairly sure that the spluttering etc was from the fact that the carb mount was broke),
back to the shed and fitted the new carb mount, inline fuel filter, cleaned out the carb with carb cleaner (Without taking it apart), new air filter and unfortunately the rotor arm and distributor cap was incorrect so we cleaned both of them up as best we could, started it up and out for another test drive drove ok for about 1/2 mile and then started the spluttering and cutting out again, engine starting straight back up some times or having to prime with the accelarator pedal before starting other times, back to the shed again changed some vacum hoses and put the compressor on the fuel hose at the inline fuel filter area and blew it back into the tank incase it was slightly blocked, also done fuel return hose, fuel looks fairly clean now filled a 500ml coke bottle twice and just seen a very small amount of dirt particles at the bottom of the bottle also checked that the short pipe that lets air into the fuel tank was o.k back up the road and same story again, parked it up for the day now and will go back at it again during the week, was just wondering does this sound familiar to anyone? any ideas?
Thanks Wesley

have you had a look in the tank as the filter on the pick up might be full of rust

also have you put some new decent fuel in it as old fuel could be full of rubbish

take the carb apart and blow it through with an air line to get it nice and clean again

hth :)

As above try and get to fuel sender and check for its all clean and you can then check tank and see if thats clean also.

Presuming its got points and condensor I'd start with that, they're probably rusted/corroded etc..

I'd go with what Jelly Belly and DJ said.
fuel deteriates (spelling) over time. it did it with mine when it was laid up, clean all your pipes, carb and tank, after cleaning put some fuel cleaner in with the new fuel that will help break down all the gunk in the jets.

and also as Madferret said then the points etc.

Lads, had a look in the fuel tank very small bit of dirt in it nothing
major, the filter at the end of the fuel sender thats in the tank,
the end is broken off looks like someone has been at it before so no blockages
or dirt there  :(
i dont know that much about carb's

or

"Presuming its got points and condensor I'd start with that, they're probably rusted/corroded etc.."

is it just a matter of cleaning points & condensor?

also have about £12 worth of new fuel in it the 1st day we started at it, forgot to mention that
cheers jellybelly

Thanks Lads

Thanks jonny
got new rotor arm and cap but were the wrong one
the old one's do need replacing but the only reason i keep
thinking its a petrol problem is when it cuts out sometimes
it needs to be primed using accelarator pedal before it starts again
 :dontknow:
i will be getting a new arm and cap when i get a chance to go back to
motor factors
i'll keep yea informed

Sounds like fuel, are you getting any muck at all in the fuel filter? If so may need the filler neck changing and the tank cleaning out or replacing.

When i had mine laid up for a coupel of years the idle jet was blocked, old fuel can solidify / go rubbery so that may have happened to yours.

Think the next move is give the carb a good clean and
fit the new rotor arm & dist cap

Hopefully that will be that
fingers crossed

one of the quick n dirty ways to clean out a clogged carb ive seen, is get it up to temp then take the airbox off.  put your hand over the choke inlet till the car struggles then let go, apparently the increased vacuum pulls all the crap out zee carb

Bit of an update
Took the carb off and gave it a clean out not much dirt in it to be honest
dont think there was anything blocked, i blew out anything i could so there
wasnt any dirt in any jets when i finished, got new distributor cap & rotor arm,
put it all back together and went for a test run, fair to say we done about 4-5 miles
without any problems, back to shed and checked ignition timming as it was pinking a little,
it was only a small bit out, back up the road again and done approx 1 mile
Then it started to chuck again  :banghead:, decided to keep going for another few miles
stoped a few times and started back up again until finally it would not start again,
had to get a tow, tried to start the car while being towed (in 2nd gear foot of the clutch, not by the key)
and it worked took the rope off and done about another 1/4 mile and it stoped again,
just wondering would the fuel pump be faulty? would it be worth changing?
the carb is a 2e pierburg
