Replacing oversize cambelt tensioner

I have a modified 1.8 engine which has an non-oem oversized cambelt tensioner on it.  Due to a cracked piston, the engine is currently being pulled apart.

I'll be putting a new cambelt on eventually, but can someone tell me what you are looking for when deciding whether or not a camblet tensioner needs replacing?

Found the answer to my question.  According to Tim Stile's book "they have sealed roller bearings that can suffer from old age, water ingress and over tensioning."
