Does anyone know of a an alternative carb make model that will replace my origional? Are VW replacements big $$?

Can I ask if you fitted the webber carb yourself, if so was it easy?
Is it cow to pull the choke handel through?
Did you notice any better fuel enconomy?
It looks like a trip to German and Swedish this weekend…..

Much better response, slightly better fuel consumption (old carb was terrible).

Do you recall how much you paid? Also a weird question but how do you use the manual choke? Do you leave it 1/2 out for the forst 5 minutes etc …

Whatever next, winding down windows by hand to keep cool ?cause there?s no A/C?

Seriously, pull it out, start and set off, gradually shoving it back in as quick as you can, its using petrol. Quiet easy to do on a car with a rev counter, keep it at @1000rpm until its warm. Depends on the car, the temp and the type of journey. On an old Mini with the carb sat on top of the exhaust manifold right up against the bulkhead only a couple of minutes max, perhaps a bit longer on the VW setup.

Only time the choke is used is when it's VERY cold in winter, and only then for 2 or 3 mins. Starts fine without for the rest of the time. We ALWAYS let it idle for a few mins (putting GTI back in garage, shutting garage door, checking make-up, combing hair, check front door is locked - you know what I mean…………) before pulling away.

If you get the K&N filter, it does add about 4hp or something but it vibrates on the bulkhead when you accelerate (and my engine mount rubbers are new).
It was dead easy to fit - it comes with an adaptor plate which fixes to the manifold then you bolt your shiny new carb to that.
Bit of an arse persuading the choke cable thru.
!!!ULTRA IMPORTANT!!!: if you get a manual choke one, before you fit the choke cable, fill the outer with that dry graphite lube and make sure its well engrained (try not to get too much on the end of the cable which clamps to the choke).
Also v important: It comes with two metal plates with a hole in. These go either side of the metal strut directly behind where the choke cable goes thru and are fixed in place with the nut. This enables you to pull and push the knob without tearing the kneebar which is what I've done. Mine never came with instructions for this part of the installation

Where to find a weber ?
It now seems however that I can't get hold of a weber carb.. Well not from G&S or eurocar parts… I hear Weber have gone bust !!!
Anyone know of a place that might stoke the e2 replacement ?
