replacement carb
Hi I'm looking to fit a replacement carb in my 92 K reg clipper. I've heard German and Swedish only sell Webber units that will require me to fit a manual choke..
Does anyone know of a an alternative carb make model that will replace my origional? Are VW replacements big $$?
Cheers, Jez

Go for the Weber and manual choke. Got one on our Clipper, had one on my 'Old Faithfull'. Best move ever !!!!

Thanks for the reply
Can I ask if you fitted the webber carb yourself, if so was it easy?
Is it cow to pull the choke handel through?
Did you notice any better fuel enconomy?
It looks like a trip to German and Swedish this weekend…..
Cheers, Jez

Ours was fitted by Volksline in Canterbury, along with other things, so can't say how easy it is.
Much better response, slightly better fuel consumption (old carb was terrible).

Hi there
Do you recall how much you paid? Also a weird question but how do you use the manual choke? Do you leave it 1/2 out for the forst 5 minutes etc …
Cheers, Jez

Oh my gawd its happened, the generation that?s never driven a car with a manual choke?.
Whatever next, winding down windows by hand to keep cool ?cause there?s no A/C?
Seriously, pull it out, start and set off, gradually shoving it back in as quick as you can, its using petrol. Quiet easy to do on a car with a rev counter, keep it at @1000rpm until its warm. Depends on the car, the temp and the type of journey. On an old Mini with the carb sat on top of the exhaust manifold right up against the bulkhead only a couple of minutes max, perhaps a bit longer on the VW setup.
Hope this helps

Ours was somewhere around ?200 plus fitting.
Only time the choke is used is when it's VERY cold in winter, and only then for 2 or 3 mins. Starts fine without for the rest of the time. We ALWAYS let it idle for a few mins (putting GTI back in garage, shutting garage door, checking make-up, combing hair, check front door is locked - you know what I mean…………) before pulling away.

Newbie

I paid about ?300 for my 32/34 weber, but I had 3.2mm jets fitted and it came with a K&N filter AND some stickers…
If you get the K&N filter, it does add about 4hp or something but it vibrates on the bulkhead when you accelerate (and my engine mount rubbers are new).
It was dead easy to fit - it comes with an adaptor plate which fixes to the manifold then you bolt your shiny new carb to that.
Bit of an arse persuading the choke cable thru.
!!!ULTRA IMPORTANT!!!: if you get a manual choke one, before you fit the choke cable, fill the outer with that dry graphite lube and make sure its well engrained (try not to get too much on the end of the cable which clamps to the choke).
Also v important: It comes with two metal plates with a hole in. These go either side of the metal strut directly behind where the choke cable goes thru and are fixed in place with the nut. This enables you to pull and push the knob without tearing the kneebar which is what I've done. Mine never came with instructions for this part of the installation
Enjoy!

Why stop at just the one? I've fitted twin Weber (just one "B" in weber!) DCOE carbs to my Mk1 Driver and it goes like a rocket - slightly more involved than a standard replacement though…
Seriously, junk the Solex/Pierburg standard VW garbage, fit a Weber and never look back!

There is a manifold, the Lynx M-150, for fitting a single Weber DCOE/DellOrto DHLA to a big block VW motor (My mate Gaz has one on his 1.8 GTI). There is a manifold that allows fitting of twin DCOE's/DHLA's to a small block motor ('coz thats what I have on my Driver) but if you just wanted the once DCOE/DHLA on a small engined VW then you'd have to make one up. Not much difference though becuase of the fact that the engine is four stroke so is only pulling in fuel for about 30% of its cycle…

Where to find a weber ?
Thanks for all the feedback
It now seems however that I can't get hold of a weber carb.. Well not from G&S or eurocar parts… I hear Weber have gone bust !!!
Anyone know of a place that might stoke the e2 replacement ?
Cheers, Jez

Weber have temporarily halted production of the DCOE carb but you can get the DCOW alternative for "performance" stuff. The "standard" replacements are still available.
Try webcon, eurocarb, Southern Carburettor or fuelsystem.co.uk (sorry - don't have any phone numbers)
