Range of water temp needle?

How much does your temp needle on the dash vary by when up to nomral temp?
Mine seems to sit 1-2mm under the LED when nomral driving and in heavy traffic uts climbs up to nearly over the LED.
It this normal, cant rember from my other MK1's (been a while and i'm getting old)  

Also the oil temp seems to jump from 100 odd up to 130 and back down again, any explanations????

Worried about the car over heating, seems fine but, you do worry dont ya!

As long as the fan cuts in its fine. A new thermostat might help.
