Oil Pressure

Post

Anyone with any info on pressure please help me out! :D

Hi,
I've got a 1.8 8V (engine code EX I think) Golf Clipper Cabriolet. I bought it with the owner informing me of suspicions of low oil pressure.

However this evening I plugged in a gauge I bought and it read 100+ psi!!?!?!?

I am led to believe standard is 28psi (2.0 BAR).

If anyone has any knowledge on this it would be great!

I think this is a faulty gauge however I just bought it?!

Thanks,
Zack

you will see around 5bar at idle on a cold engine, then as it warms it'll drop slowly down to around 1bar-ish.  Note that readings at the head may be a bit lower than readings at the oil filter housing.

if the pressure really is over 100psi it may be the relief valve in the oil pump has failed/siezed

Thank you mate.

Did another test and had time to let it warm up a bit thanks to daylight this time!

It got down to about 50-60psi which is roughly 3-4 BAR i seem to remember but no less.

Is there anything to worry about here or need I not worry?

Thanks again,
Zack

Completely warm mate, like standard running temp. :)

does seem a bit high still, maybe gauge is over-reading or the sender is miss-matched? 0-5 bar sender not same as 0-10

Don't think it's the gauge mate, it's brand new, won't cross that out of my mind though. So is high oil pressure a bad thing? What could be the cause of it? What would you do in this situation? Thanks again mate,
Zack

are the gauge and sender matched or did you buy them separately? as I say high pressure could be down to the pressure relief valve in the oil pump.

I would try to get the pressure confirmed by a local garage or another gauge just to be sure. what make is this one? VDO would be my recommendation

Don't know to be honest mate, all I got was a gauge that plugs into where the sensor normally goes (I.e. on top of filter housing/side of head) and it goes by the name of BERGEN. Was a little kit for like £20, think I might take it to a garage up the road for an MOT in a few weeks, might just ask then to check it out whilst doing that. Can this high pressure be doing any damage to the engine at all etc? Any thoughts on replacing oil pump?
Cheers again for the help mate,
Zack.

ok well check the sender for any markings, it should say 0-5 or 0-10 this should match the range on your gauge

Do you mean on the actual sensor? And what is the difference between 0-5 and 0-10?

This is all a massive help by the way mate cheers!

yes, the resistance ranges differ so it'll read wrong if you have a sensor missmatch :)

Ahhhh ok, I'll have another look tomorrow!
So why can it differ if I'm taking the sensor out and plugging my gauge in? Surely it should just read the pressure? Unless its that the gauge and the actual part where gauge can plug in to differ? Just to clarify lol
Cheers. :D

Had a little look mate and couldn't find anything :( where would the 0-5/0-10 info be? Looked around where sensor goes and even on sensor and nothing :(
Thanks again,
Zack

on a genuine vw/audi one its stamped on the spanner flats, aftermarket may be unmarked so that wont help you

What's a spanner flat? I take it that's on gauge? That is aftermarket yeah.
So if the 0-5 and 0-10 thing is mismatched it could in theory be reading like double what it should be?

the spanner flay is the flat part, where you put your spanner to undo the sensor
