1.6 carb engine swap

Hello all newbie here, can anyone tell me if i am going to run into any structual problems when swapping over a 1.6l 1981 to a 1.6l 1984 golf engine. Also will my original manifold with the webber go straight onto the 1984 model. Lastly i have a 1984 wiring loom will i be able to sacrafice some of it to put right the S O Bs previous owners attempt at a little light hearted entertainment on the 1981 or should i just try and wap the lot?

Any info would be much appreciated, Thanks Chris

Hi Chris and welcome along to the forum. Have moved your questions to the technical section for you. Good luck with the project.

1981 and 1984 will be different wiring systems, but with there being so little engine wiring it should be adaptable with not too much head scratching.

When you say 1984 Golf, do you mean Mk1 tintop, cabby or Mk2 Golf?

That's definitely a Mk1 Golf and its a carb engine (which was my other question I was going to ask - is your 1981 a carb or injection car?) so it should go fine. If you're swapping the gearbox too, then you should be ok on driveshaft (inner CVJ) size too, because both should be 90mm, but its worth a check before you install because if not the same, the easiest thing to do is reuse your existing gearbox (assuming nothing wrong with it).

You've moved it to small block engines, the 1.6 is a big block.

thanks paul, i'm just now concerned that the donor engine is the lower bhp as i'm lead to believe that the one in the karmen  is110 bhp ???

The engine in the pic is 75bhp

I don't know what engine you have, but you mentioned "1.6 carb engine swap" as a subtitle - so is yours a carb too, or an injection engine?

Karmen - Karmann - all cabrios are manufactured by Karmann, hence the badging etc but there was always the choice of the GTI engine or a lower powered carb engine and GL (later, Clipper) trim level.

All 1.6 carb models are 75bhp (approx.) - at least that's what the specifications say.

I have just spent some investigation time and have tracked the engine down to being a scirocco 1.8 hhhmmmm now there will be alot of issues i think to change it back to a 1i6 and obviously the manifold and carb wont sit on it ?????

the 1.8 engien will drop straight in, your old exhaust will fit. you'll have to use the 1.8 inlet and carb though as your ole 1.6 lump wont have the coolant channel outlet on the head, but the 1.8 will.

if the 1.8 carb is the original 2e2 carb then there will be a bit of extra wiring to do, if its a weber then it'll run fine on the old engine wiring. the other issue to address is the ignition system, the old one will probably be points ignition, and new one probably electronic

to tell either way look at the dizzy, a 3 pin plug is electronic, a single wire is points. you can fit the 1.6 dizzy into the 1.8 block worst case, it probably wont make much difference to the ignition. worst case give it a bit extra ignition advance ;)
