How to tell which engine it is?

Hello,
I live in Malaysia and am going to look at a Mk1 Golf this weekend. Details and pictures here: http://www.mudah.my/Classic-VW-Golf-MK1-4588109.htm

The car is described as being a Golf LS, 1600cc. But I thought the LS was 1300cc?

I know that the Mk1 shell received various 1600cc engines, and who knows what was supplied in Malaysai.

Is there any way of identifying which engine is in this car?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Matthew Smith

it's a big block so it's not a 1300. looks like a GTI running on a carb but it might be a different rocker cover to be honest.

either way it's not a 1300 but could be anything from a 1.5 to a 1.8.

looks like no engine im familiar which, but then im only used to looking at 1457 engine 90% of the time.
I personally have never seen the wheel the belt is on above the alternator before. I would be interested to know what this is.

Big Block 1300 as in south african Citi golf's

Maybe a case of either the LS in your neck of woods comes with 1.6, the engine is a big block but 1300 as above and had the rocker cover changed due to a paint job and original was not in good shape, thou incorrect cover for the block.
Or the original engine blew up and was replaced.
if your planing on buying it, surely the seller of whom looks like he/she has gone to long lengths to looks after the car will have proof of exactly what is under the bonnet, if no history, walk off
