Help MK1 Golf keeps breaking down!!!! aaaaargh

So I drive my MK! Gold Clipper auto, with manual choke to teh station and back. Any further than 2 or three miles you lose power and the car stalls. It doesnt start and sounds as though petrol is not getting through. But leave it an hour or a day and it starts. Can it overheat after 2 miles in freezing weather? I did have teh fuel pump replaced a few months ago and the tank apparently is a little rusty and all teh muck was cleaned out. I am really confussed and on teh verge of outing it, unless someone can help please?

many thanks :D

Are you still running it with the choke on after moving off.
when i had my 1.5 with man choke as soon as i was moving i pushed it back in and it ran no probs

it could be carb icing up, check the air hose from the exhaust manifold up to the carb, if hose not there carb ices up and car stops

tank is vacuum locking.  run it for a minute then take the fuel cap off and listen for air being sucked in.
there is a vent at the top of the filler neck and also though the cap, money on the filler neck vent being blocked.

check the fuel reservoir as this causes problems and does not let any fuel get to the engine
