Gear linkages??? Help

Sorry peeps, Have used the search to no avail. And am a bit stuck.

The problem is……….

Clipper 1.8 carb. Put new 16v engine in on original gearbox and had no problems untill the gearbox blew. Not really suprising.
Then have sourced a gearbox out of a 1.8gti mk1. This looks the same as the original box other than the reverse light sender being different than the orginal. (that was a 2pin, now I have a block connector. will try and work that out later.)
It has all fitted up ok other than I cannot get all the gears. Have played around with the linkages and can get all but 5th.
Would I need the linkages from a mk1 gti? are they different from a 1.8 carb mk1?

Help the wife is going to kill me soon if I dont get the car through mot and back to her

1.8 linkage should be the same so no you don't need new linkage.
take the linkage of and check you can get 5th on the box for start and all other gears while your at it. (think it's all the way in and to your left)
if you can get it then the linkage is out of line. start at the collar that connects the shift rod to the lever. move it a small amount round and see if that gets it. then the other way etc. till you find all gears. only other thing thats adjustable is the position of the lever inside the car.

there is a way of doing this by measuring gaps but i can't remember it. there is a thread on here about setting your linkage after changing it. use the search facility.

Cheers fella thats what I thought. I have had my mate who is a mechanic trying for about 3 hours to get 5th and he cant.
Starting to think it is the box but I had it running before I bought it.
Not too sure what else to do. Give it another go I guess.

Thanks
Tim
