Engine Mounts

We had the clutch re-fitted today due to a warped friction plate and whilst the clutch has been repaired OK, they told us that the engine mounts were seriously knackered.

Is there any easy way to check if they are knackered or not or should i just take it to a garage and ask them ?

The car drives OK and there isnt any major noises coming from the engine bay apart from a squeak when you pull off.

Any advice is greatly appreciated as usual  :)

What would be the worst case scenario from driving on a knackered engine mount, the engine wont fall out will it  :?

The engine won't fall out ! But it is not a good idea for it to move about
too much in the engine bay. It will add to wear and tear on the CV joints,
hoses, cables and exhaust system, it and can lead to juddering as the engine moves around in respect to the throttle position and the controls in general. I guess in an extreme, the exhaust becomes the restraint !
Hope this helps, Keep smiling. J.

Good point about the exhaust. You'll probably find after a little while, with the rocking back & forth of the engine, you'll need to replace the manifold or downpipe, in addition to the engine mounts.

How much should the engine move on the mounts? I assume 1-2cm is too much?

Cheers.
