Engine Change

firstly sorry if this gets asked a lot but i have had a good look around.

I have a 1.8 clipper mk1, its a 1.8 carb.
Basically think the engine needs a good old tune up and possibly rebuild, so thought i would find out about appropriate swaps. Any ideas what the most reccomended swap is and on rough prices for fitting one?

Thanks in advance

sorry if this was too "over asked"or vague as no one has replied yet.

If i want to change from the 1.8 carb to a 2.0 8v or 16v what exactly will be required?
Does the fuel tank need changing? ECU etc…

I just want to try and find the most sensible swap, both cost effective and suggested by those in the know on here.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Starting from a Clipper instead of a GTI means that you have a lot of extra work to convert certain items up to (or take the opportunity to go beyond) GTI spec:

- suspension
- brakes
- fuel system, if you are fitting/using K-Jet fuel injection

so its much easier to start from a GTI.

The usual questions apply:

- how much money do you have?
- how much performance do you want?
- what's the intended use of the car? day-to-day, 2nd car, trackdays, etc?

thank you very much for the reply. the car isnt intended for anything other than just being some fun for my girlfriend. she loves mk1's and always has.
I could just get the current engine rebuilt, but thought a change might make sense.
The inteded outcome is an able car, not super fast, just blends in with others if that makes sense. And there isnt really a budget, but wouldnt want to spend more than 1k on the conversion? does that make me sound cheap :)

I'd stick with a 1.8 carb then!

and just get it rebuilt? would it really cost more than 1k to get the parts together for converting to an injection based system?

and thanks for taking the time to reply and help - i do appreciate that this question must get asked all the time. Im a GT4 man and always have been, so golfs arent really my forte.

So thanks again

1.8 carb suggestion was based on cost vs gains. Basically, if you did it it would be minimal cost. To convert carb to injection, would cost a bunch more but not gain that much more power. Now, if you were to spend more money and (for example) commit to 1.8 16V or something, then there's even more power there.

Another option could be to fit a 1.8 GTI engine but using the original carb, or a single Weber rejetted to suit. This would gain you bigger valves and a hotter cam, giving 100-105bhp over the stock 90bhp. Also, a GTI manifold and exhaust system would help out (no need to go to a 4 branch for that power level, the stock GTI manifold flows really well as it happens).

So:

1.8 GTI engine
seal up the injector holes with 1p pieces and screw in the top hats to hold them in
stock carb inlet manifold
Weber carb rejetted to suit application
GTI exhaust manifold
GTI exhaust system

all for approx ?200-300, I imagine, main varying factor would be where you locate the carb, and if you go for new or secondhand exhaust stuff.

Stick in the GTI gearbox at the same time, would make it more sporty.

thanks very much for the advice.
The gearbox at present has just been replaced at a cost of ?400 so will prob keep for the mean time
As for the engine, would you go breakers or are there companies to suggest and or avoid?
Same for carbs, would you go new or second hand?

thanks
