Cool, cheers. How easy is it to drain the tank & how do you do it?

To totally drain the system, the thermostat needs to be removed,2 bolts at the bottom of the water pump, then flush the tank with a hose pipe, pull the top rad hose off and hose that too,the bottom hose will be off already when you take the thermostat out so all the crap will flow out

G11 = not quite as long life
G12 = long life, but only add to G12 or completely replace old coolant (don't mix with G11)
G12+ = long life, can be mixed with any other coolants.

I use the blue stuff from a vauxhall dealer about ?6 or ?7 for 5 litres. Mix half and half with water and it turns green when in radiator. Its ethylene glycol. My Mk1 is 1982 GL 1475 classic slightly disguised as a shed.

I've never quite understood what exacly is special about VW's G11 coolant, I think its something to do with being more environmentally friendly when it comes to throwing it away; or safer to use, or something. G12 was a different chemical which meant it had a long life. G12+ was different again, to avoid the problems they generated for themselves by making G12 not mixable with G11. Normal coolant from anywhere else is ethylene glycol.
If you're going to replace the coolant regularly anyway, use the (cheap) boggo standard stuff. If you want to put it in and forget about it, use G12+.
