Car Not Starting....
Ok, so yesterday i get the rubber grommet for and new alternator arm for my Golf Mk1 1600.
Its been running ok-ish…
I try to start her today and she clicks but dead.
I jump start her and she starts. As soon as i turn the lights on she dies again.
This has all started since i replaced the arm and rubber grommet that goes in the arm.
Am guessing that my timing is way out and not holding the charge?
Anyone have any clues?
thnx

Im not shure what you replaced but make shure the body of the alternator is grounded to the engine block,it cuts out when you put the lights on due to the coil voltage going too low and loosing the spark.

Hi Bert.
Well i replaced the alternator arm, the one that holds it onto the engine.
I also replaced the rubber bush that goes inside the arm. The one that u screw the nut through to the engine.
What your saying is making sense though.

put a jump lead to the negative battery post and the other end to the alternator casing, then try see if it charges.
I presume the battery light comes on with the ignition? and goes out when its running?
my TD had a fault like this,it was the earth strap from the gearbox to the body/battery

Yup sounds like a bad earth. I had some resistance on my gearbox earth strap causing intermittant starting. Dam good clean. sorted.

it might look on, but with time and decay, it might have gained some resistance. Just unbolt it, wire brush it, bolt back up. See if it cures it.
Rubber grommit for the arm of the alternator. Mines not got one.The alternator chasis has to be earthed to the engine. The big thick wire usually red, goes back to the live of the battery, and a thin usually blue wire, goes to your dash batt light display. Thats really it on charging system.
