a few silly questions

i'm not a mechanic, i know a few but not anyone who will give me the time to teach me anything… so i will have to learn by myself.

last night i took the rocker cover off my 1.8GL so i can sand it down and spray it, im going to replace the gasket, ive heard of putting some vasaline on the gasket before i put it on… is this right?

what else should i do while its off?

another silly question… what is the trick to those waterpipe clips? i use some mole grips (they dont lock) but its fiddley!

thanks

if its a new gasket you don't realy need to put anything on all grease/vasaline does is sticks it to the head to stop it moving while u drop the cover back on, but a new gasket shouldn't really move, large pipe grips/adjustable pliars (oops spell check!) are good for the clips but mole grips adjust them so they lock just as the clip is fully open, but if they slip and catch your finger you'll know about it belive me it hurts!!

Gasget

Hi, This mod works for mk1s, not sure about mk2s..

Replace rocker cover gasget with 1 peice rubber one form mk3 GTI 1.8. You will also need to replace stud screws and nuts to make it work. Part # N10186301. Cork ones dont last long and soon start to leak.

Just twist the clips of with water pump pliers or mole grips and replace with jubilee clips.

Vasaline ??????
