16V timing marks!

Hi all,

Just about to complete a cam belt change on my car! However i am apprehensive of the timing marks! I have got the cam one all lined up fine! The crank one is a pain! The previous owner has market both BTDC and TDC (on the fly wheel looking through the observation hole on the gearbox) so i dont know which is which! i dont run a cam belt cover so dont have that either so i have resorted to the dip stick down spark plug hole in number one! any way i can know for definete? Just i am having her set up in jan and want her running spot on so help is good please! Also where can i get a gearbox inspection hole plug previous owners used sound deadening nice!!! and new crank pully bolts!??

refit the crankpulley, that has a notch which lines up to an arrow on the inner belt cover. at the flywheel end, the TDC mark is the small punch mark, not the big diamond. see piccy here:

Hi,

Thanks again for replying, i manged to get it set to that punch mark, i couldnt use the case marks as i have no covers  So thats done however the previous owever the previous owner marked it beyound the punch mark! Does this explain the distributor being set to maximum advance on the stop! also why it cranks really really slowly before firing on a brand new battery! if so will this be solved by retiming to the big diamond BTDC?  THANKS

PADDY thanks again for replying

the diamond is stock 6degs timing, with carbs you can prob get away with more advance, basically try to add as much as you can till it pinks, then back off a bit. if its still turning over slowly fit a diesel alternator or a mk3 golf one, gives you more cranking torque :)

Thanks for the reply,

I will have a look when i am alloud to go to the garage lol! I cant seem to find the timing mark on the distributor and i think its running to advanced, as the previous owenr had set the timing mark to adavnaced and the distrubtor was set to that and i havent changed it since so im getting a weird puff puff cough sound when cranking and its slow! so im thinking thats its pinking because its to far advanced! ?

Thanks again for replying! will a mk3 gti fit a 020 gearbox with no mods?

Thanks

Paddy

do you mean you have no diamond mark on the fly? if so invest in a timing light with an advance dial and you can just use the punch mark, dial in 8degrees advance to start with and work from there.

MK3 1.8-2.0 8v and diesel/turbo diesel starter will bolt right on, only difference is it has like a 1 pin plug rather than a spade for the red/black wire, but the old spade will push right into the connector anyway so no big deal.

MK3 TDI uses cable shifter so that starter wont fit
