1.6 dipstick levels?

1.6 dipstick levels?

I have a 1.6 which I recently refitted new gaskets top and bottom, new sump, filters, and generally cleaned up the whole engine and tonight we started to put it's first refill of oil in.  I was wondering if anyone had a picture of a 1.6 dipstick because I'm not sure I have the right one.  There's 2 tiny knicks on the dipstick and after 2 litres of oil it was about an inch over both the marks.  Obviously something didn't add up.  This was telling me that the engine ran on about a litre of oil.
Would I be right in saying that the engine should take about 3 - 3.5 litres?
Any help would be good.  Especially pics of the dipstick so I can check that I've got the right one.
Cheers
Baz

Wooders, I can't see how this is in the wrong section? I'm assuming its a big block engine, and its in the engine section? Was the post moved?

I put it in the mk1 general chart as I thought that oil levels in a MK1 would be a fairly general thing to them but i suppose as i'd mentioned the engine size it had to be put in the engine section.  But big block injection?  Wrong section again.

The plastic bit may not be there at all?  That might explain it.  Should there be a plastic piece on top of the metal tube then?
I might have to get me one of them.

yes there is a plastic sleeve that sits over the tube and hold the dipstick in. common to brake off. cheap to buy

I got a dipstick tube but something ust isn't tickety boo with it.  The main probably being that it doesn't fit.  So my questions - have I got the right dipstick? have I got the right dipstick tube in the block? have I got the right orange piece? and how does it fit on?

Couple of pics:

Can you read the part number off the dipstick? That would help us sort you out a lot.

I wasn't aware of one on it.  I don't think it's even thick enough to have a part number on it. It's more like a bent coat hanger with a couple of tiny washers welded on. I was hoping someone would recognise if it's the same as theirs.  The rubber stopper on it fits perfectly into the tube so I was beginning to think there might be something wrong with it but i'm pretty lost to be honest.
I can't seem to find any engine pics of a 1600 anywhere on here.  I've been struggling to sort out the vacuum lines I need and stuff like that but that's for another thread.  I'd like to get the oil and cooling system sorted first.

my dipstick in my 1800 looks like that with the small metal tube in the block too.

I'll maybe get a couple of photos taken tomorrow of the marks on mine and measure it.  Maybe the 1.8 and 1.6 ones are different.  On ETKA, the diagram shows a guide funnel for the 1.6 so i'm going to have to check that out a bit more.

Can't see why they would be different if both from a mk1 - same oil capacity (3 litres without filter/3.5 with filter). VW increased oil capacity by half litre with the introduction of the hydraulic head, but that was mid 80's, so a late cabby dipstick might cause problems. I would have thought the VW part number would be embossed on the plastic surround attached to the dipstick, unless it isn't a genuine item.

I've decided to give the car and myself a rest so i'm going on holidays for a week.  As well as that my new gf is away to oz for a year so i'll have plenty of time to work on it from next week onwards.
I'll get stuck in and find a part number or something when i get back.

Tell it to fix itself while you're away or it'll be cubed

Found these VW numbers - for what I can see this is all you need…

055 115 611 F

oil dipstick - EG,EM,EN,FR,GH,JB,CR

059 115 625

seal - EG,EM,EN,FR,GH,JB,CR

bear in mind that this thread was moved to the wrong section and I have a solex34 pict-5 carb on my engine so I don't know if that has any bearing on the part numbers.

But thanks for those.  I'll see if I can compare them to what I've got.

I moved the post, the telepathy machine isn't working that well at the moment so I was unable to work out if your engine was a carb or injection (you didn't say in the original post). In any case, it didn't particularly affect the issue at hand. I stuck it in injection because it gets more posts and more people looking into it.

no problem
At least I've got some help anyway so it's a start.  It beats standing about in my garage scratching my head for a while.

Moved to carb section, what engine code is yours? FR (which the part numbers also refer too) is a 1.6 carb engine.

There's another thread of mine here somewhere with block and head part numbers but i've still been unable to identify an engine code as the engine was partially restored and the engine number is gone from the front of the block.

As I see it, there's 2 things which determine which dipstick you need:

1. Whether your dipstick tube has an orange top on it.
2. Depth of sump

VW engines of the era, started out with a shallow sump and no orange guide. Then they introduced the orange guide. Then they introduced the deeper sump. So there will be 3 different dipsticks available:

055 115 611 F
068 115 611 P
027 115 611 C

The dealer will have the correct code, but you'll need your model year and engine number to be sure. Also be aware, diesels are different.
