1.5 running problems

Need a little advice please. ok, cold mornings start up engine (doesnt always go first turn of the key :? ) auto choke (useless thing) idles the engine at about 1500 rpm. thing is it knocks off way too early, leaving the car spluttering, shuddering, cutting out etc, etc!

when it runs on the flat (mornings) it can start choking, like major flat spots where the throttle isnt responsive atall :dontknow:  i have to drop a gear to get some speed back up, it feels like  fuel starvation. u have to tickle the throttle to let it rev from idle, if u dump it it will shudder and cut out. my 1.1 did this aswell, but it was damp in the electrics, im pretty sure this if a fuel/carbouration problem.

iv replaced the fuel filter with a high flow one, new plugs, all electrics cleaned etc.. its the 1.5 engine btw, 1983 GX.

i reley on this car daily so please help me out guys!!

cheers

Get a manual choke kit to sort the choke probs

You need to understand if this is a fuel starvation or over fuelling issue - gunson's colourtune is good.

I have good used 1.5 carbs if you need one.

Hi mate, u have PM   runs really sweet when it warms up, no real problems. the one remaining one is that soddin useless auto choke, which still isnt doin its job and i need to look at changing. all the flat spots, shuddering, power loss etc are all fettled now (touch wood of course!)

My 1.5 GX is exactly, exactly the same.

I usually leave it to warm up for about 5 mins before I drive anywhere, I know when it's ready because it changes from revving at about 500 revs to revving at 2000!  To stop it from revving so high, once it's warmed up, I just tap the accelerator and it drops back down.. wish I could find out what the problem is.. anyone know?

It has trouble starting too.  What I do now to guarantee a start every time is, obviously making sure clutch is down/neutral is selected, hold the accelerator all the way to the floor while switching on.  Obviously let go of accelerator soon as it starts up or else you'll be revving for the whole street to hear.  Not sure what this does differently but it works.

As for chugginess, it's just like that if I don't warm it up.  So I try to warm it up every time.. trouble with that is it stinks!!  That old VW petrol smell, I quite like it, but everyone else on the street hates it.. any ideas for those fumes would be good too.

Hope I haven't hijacked the thread too much!!

no mate your quite alright   i thought this thread died weeks ago! i dont let mine run first, it will tick over on its own (yes, about 1500 rpm) for only about a minute so i try to get as far as i can in that one minute!! then after that when choke shuts off, it will die as soon as the clutch is pushed in   usually takes a good 15mins running before i can stop using my right foot sideways as a brake and throttle at the same time.

It sounds like you have the same problem I had with my carb when I used to put my foot down on the clutch.
It turned out that my carb was full of dirt. Anyway. I just replaced the carb and the car runs ok now.

ello, ive got the same problem.went the route of chanching the plugs, leads, dizzy etc this help for a few days but then same old, so cleaned fuel tank, new fuel lines/filter sorted it for a few more days. then a bloke was telling me about carb freezing so i got some 5inch aluminium ducting stuck it on the end of my filter posisioned the other end by my manifold.problem solved it now starts every time and no more dodgy left foot braking when trying to come to a stop.

Isn't this the standard way to set the choke?  Fully depress the accelerator, let it return, and then start the engine?  Lol - that said, I know all about fancy footwok and slowing the car with the handbrake, especially in winter!!
