this took 5 mins
i got back in the car turned the key for about 5 secs and it fired up and drove fine.
then today after around 10 miles of 30 mph driving the car did the same thing again,at first i thought is it my alternator thats at fault as i tried to start it after 20 secs of this stalling and it appeared to have no ignition light at all totally dead as if the battery was dead.waited another minute or 2..put it into park and it fired up again and drove.got to where i was going which was about another mile, stoped got out for 10 mins then car fired up fine although the alternator belt squeaked briefly.so i drove back home a wee bit faster than before drove about 3 miles then,it died again.waited 20 secs fired ity over.this time i floored it big time in first gear the car revved fine and it was even wheelspinning.
got home ,stopped the car after 5 secs restarted car it fired instantly.
looked under the bonnet this time at where the carb joins the manifold and the flange /gasket looked a bit wet,so i guess its this thats at fault
it seems the car only does this if your driving steadily not too fast and not too slow. as the dayt i bought the car i had a fairly fast trip hoime of 25 miles which i did between 40mph and 70mph and the car was perfect.
another thing last night after my first breakdown i did have the heater on and the car was fine, today the car had the fan on set to cold.i wonder if this is a factor too.
anyway i wonder if there are anyone to go to in my area which is paisley glasgow.
i must admit iam new to vw's as ive been doing peugeot 205s and citroen cx's and ax's for years and i know them inside and out and there faults but its funny how french cars suffer different faults.
anyhelp is much appreciated

i did virtually the whole fuel system and it still kept dying.
yours seems to have a few more issues tho.
best to talk to pete/peddersgolf he knows his stuff with these babies.
good luck and never underestimate what your golf will do to ruin your day, mine tried to set itself on fire yesterday! mustve known i was planning on selling her at vwnw today! never mind at least i got to jetwash the back garden, who wants to stroll around in a lovely park full of cool vw's all day anyway!

Apparently my vacuum advance is fecked which I am about to change to see if it helps, the perhaps its time to look at the fuel pump which was fitted just before I bought the car….
Gutted, I can't drive for endless miles in her yet….just a quick trip to town and back before she warms up is all I can manage….very depressing!
The saga continues….
