Help?!?!
Just bought myself a tidy 82' 1.1 5 door, the only probelm is that the engine is a gonner! Anyway its no probelm i was planning to swap it for something faster
Well ive been searching through the forums and really am getting soo lost to which would be the best engine and gearbox for me. My dad (who owns a garage) and i bought the car as a sort of project for the summer. From what i can understand the mk2 1.8 gti gearbox (020?) is a good one for its long 5th gear?
and now the tricky part, im looking for a n/a engine probaly around 1.4 - 2L which is semi economical whilst still being (hmm fun  ) I see the mk4 golf engines are quite popular but they seem to be pretty expensive with all the little parts that is needed. Now im not too bothered if i go the ecu route or just carbs its whatever is best really.
I mean obviously there are a load of variables but any help that could get me searching the right way would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advanced
Tom

As I understand things, there's so little difference between 1.1 and 1.3 that you might as well seek the latter, for 10bhp more.

Alternatively switch your drivers side mount over for a big block mount, stcik with the carbs and build a 1.8 twin webered monster!
either engine would great fun, then again if your happy to do the work the worlds your oyster…
Hope that helps, also what paul said, you'll defo want better brakes!
