'79 mk1 turbo
Now i could fit the brake bias valve bracket, the spring and all the brand new NLA parts i bought from VW oh so many years ago- still havent fitted the new door seals yet….embarassing. ops:
Anyway, i jacked the rear up, took the struts off and stripped off the loose underseal although i left all the intact material, spent some hours brushing and making sure any small surface scale was taken care of and then underbody stonechipped the tubs.
Im quite happy with the results although the photo dosent show it painted in tornado red yet.
The struts are jamex items and have served well, but i may change the dampers for adustables if theyre available and recoat the springs as i cant see anything wrong with them at all.
A quick gander under the bonnet.
The wirings been a bit of a pain if im honest because i junked the old mk1 fusebox ages ago due to it being of the circuit board type that was a burnout waiting to happen.
Instead i opted to change it for the later golf2 and corrado box which has a bombproof internal design.
Its created some interesting problems though as things like the horn are run via relay instead of through the horn contact at full current.
Anyway, heres a look at my spag bol.
Eeeuch! Tasty.
Been fighting a few entrenched gremlins, one of which decided to dig himself in on the horn circuit.
After going through the diagram and checking i found the little blighter and exercised extreme predjudice to remove him.
The horns are actuated using a relay to cut down contact current and preserve the life of the contact ring and its reliability, but its earthed through the column which isnt directly connected to the body except via a preloading spring at the column base.
Gremlins situated here:
And here:
In the end they were so well dug in they had to be removed by Force.
With some luck i may have this at least roadworthy by the end of the year ( its only been….erm too long) and take it for some exercise.
Cant wait.
Next items to order- full exhaust system to replace the current abomination, and a set of Eibach ARb's methinks!

What injection do you use? Also, do you have a vent in the bonnet to allow more airflow through the intercooler?

Looking good - I don't think I've seen an 1.8 8v turbo in a Mk1 before.

Thanks Rich, yeah its not a very common mod nowadays, usually 16v or 20valve turbo- i just wanted to keep it fairly simple.
Injections G60 digifant1 but ive got an Autronic SM4 management to splice onto it once its all been run in and tested because itll probably outstrip the stock injectors.
I do indeed have a bonnet vent above the intercooler, i think i might install a pacet fan under it for some extra cooling tho.

what about the dizzy and head work? was that all quite simple or did you have to source some TurboTechnics stuff?

The intake manifold is just a stock K-jet type with a G60 throttle body bolted to it.
The inside of the plenum needed a small adjustment with a carbide cutter but apart from that its stock.
The exhaust manifold came from Vince? at Stealth racing and is an american item for Garret T3's to bolt on.
The turbo is a Garret item sized for the engine.
The downpipes basically a home knocked up item i did some years ago, made it from an old Audi 2005T exhaust downpipe, but its not particularly neat so itll have to go.
Headwork i did some time ago, but that was before i got more heavily into the subject of head modifications so itd likely benefit if i re-did it.
Ill do a porting piece for folks on here if anyones interested?
