Rust in fuel filler
I am looking at a Golf GTI TR1 to buy. The body is in great condition, no rust no scratches. However when I opened the fuel cap and looked inside the filler pipe it was all rusted. No holes but rust all the same. Should I be really worried about this? The car was running well when I took it for a test drive, but I wonder how it would do on a longer drive, when it really warms up.
The car is priced at ?1850. How much does it cost to get the fuel filler/tank replaced and is this a sign that I need to do that?
Thanks

Has someone seen or written a guide to replacing it?
I bought the Bentleys manual, but that tells you how to replace the fuel tank, not the filler pipe, doh!!

you can also use one of the telescopic arial type magnets to have a sweep of the fuel tank if your wrried about metal bits in there, its best done through the inspection hatch under the seat though, removing the tank and cleaning it out is the 100% way but it depends what facilitys you have as its not ideal doing it on a driveway with axle stands!!!

Need to order the filler neck soon, do you get the packing plastic/foam with the new pipe?
Are there any replacements for the standard steel pipe?
Anyone make an aluminium or a plastic one?

If you cant get a SS one and are worried then why not get a standard one from GSF etc. Then paint up to provide extra protection when fitted, build up a few coats if you wanted to.
