running bike carbs on a 1.3

hi guys… probably a post for steve matthews!
ive been told that bike carbs will fit onto a 1.3 (the carbs i have in mind are from a 600cc R6-yamaha) by word of mouth ive heard these fit.

my friends brother has just won some on ebay, and im looking to get some too, so if anyone knows about fitting them, how hard it is and whats involved - extra parts etc?

theres a polo 1.3 on pitstopperformance.com under show me your engine…so take a look, i think its a nice mod for the younger drivers, because realisticly being almost 18 now its going to take at least another 3 years to be able to insure a gti

i looked into the polo GT/g40 conversion but the engines are rare as.

hi mitch, bike carbs are becoming a bit of a hot topic at the moment, a few people have done the conversion and their are a few different threads on various forums going in to the ins and outs,
check this one out some good info, some originally from the suzuki swift forum of all places, they seem to be well ahead of the vw scene and got the conv. susssed.

also check out steve's thread on the 1.3

hi, iv used r6 carbs on my 1.3 polo gt engine in my mk1 golf.

its a very easy conversion to do, hardest part is making up a manifold (i got mine made for me by 'bogg brothers' (01944738234)

the carbs attach to the manifold using rubber tube and big jubillee clips, i found the best stuff to use is fuel filler tube, as it is thick walled and very strong. i used www.rallydesign.co.uk for mine.

you may also need to uprate your fuel pump and also fit a regulator. another difficult part is to settin them up, i took mine over to bogg brothers as they specialise in this. think thats about it rly.

good luck.

how much they charge you for the manifold?

Post

for custom manifold your looking at about ?175,from altiss engineering(07890 591618) , bogg brothers know this conversion inside out.

i'm trying to find a cheaper solution maybe using a scrap manifold and some local engineering help. after all, all you need for a manifold is an inlet gaskit, from this an alloy plate can be lazer cut, to that 4 alloy runners need to be welded to enable the bike ports to match the inlet ports on the head, the carbs should be kept at the same angle they where on the bike, to keep the float bowls level, which together with the inclination of the engine will enable you to calc. the angle at which the runners should be welded to the plate. just a matter of finding the time to do all that, easy!!

some more inspirartion

is that setup running, teh standard fuel pump!!

Post

it looks like the standard fuel pump to me,(both pics came from the polo forum, and are the same car). the standard pump should be more than up to the job, they run at about 4 or 5 psi so well suited, with a pressure reg. attached.

they only need bout 3 psi (thats what mine are running at) and also im pretty sure iv heard you can run them at any angle.

its quite hard to make up a manifold as the pipes have to have bends in them.

its possible to split the carbs up tho and space them out so you can have a strate stubbed manifold.

8O  ?175 for the manifold…not such a cheap modification after all…id be interested in knowing the performance side of things, to see if its worthwhile? Mitch

i cudnt get a accurate power figure because when i got it on the rollin road it was the 1st time itd been powerd up and then we realised the clutch was slipping. but now its working properly with the polo gt engine and is quite rapid.its prolly as quik as a gti upto 60/70.

bike carbs

im lost...... so how many bike carbs do you have? 4? and how do you match the linkages up?

hi si, yes in the conversions we are all banging on about we're using a bank of four carbs. thats the way they come from the scrap bikes. they are allready bolted together with a common fuel rail, and linked throttle butterflies, so ideally they need to be reused in this config.

so any bike carbs will do thejob? or has it got to be of a certin make/model. im a apprentice mechanic and i know what im doing with standerd stuff or direct replacment stuff, but when its sumthing completly diffrent i cant kinda get my head around it, sorry if im being stupid or plain dumb.

I think its just a case of trial and error. I'm sure as more people do this - to ALL cars. then i think it might get simpler as to what works…

but the simple theory …to me anyway…carbs are carbs…and they aren't fussy about what they're on…  :)

bike carbs

just bought a set of r6 bike carbs of the old trustey ebay. cost me 7.99, 8pound postageso 13.99 all in. only thing is the throttle position sensor isn't included, he said he can get me one for 10pounds, any good? or can i get one cheaper? or dont i need one? the carbs will e going on a 1300cc mk1 golf engine. all i need now is a manifold, any one got one going cheap?
thanks, and yes another one converted to the motorbike carb scene!

nice one si, i was looking at those myself. you don't need the throttle pot. unless your going for fully mapped engine management, like megasquirt or megajolt.
cheap manifold? we would all like one of them! personally i'm going to use some local engineering help and improvise something.

so i take it i got a bargin?
so ifi am going down your route and using a local engineering firm do ineed to take my manifold down to show them or what? im kinda new tothis scene after getting me golf on the road 2 wks ago, i want to make it abit nippier.
i mentiond this conversion to some lad that we hang about wiht (he's abit of a i no everything person)
basically he said he cant be done, then when i told him the ins and outs of it witht he custom manifold etc, he recons ill blow my engine up and it will put to much strain on my crank, cam, bearings etc. anybody got any technical terms that i can say to him to shut him up. and will i have to uprate anything else? or is it the case of custom manifold bolt your carbs on etc and away you go?
my 1300cc is suffering from the classic oil wearing out of the side of the block, so me and a mate are doing the head gasket and belt next wkend whilst ive got thehead of, anything worth while me doing?
many thanks and sorry if im being plain dumb you'll have to bear with me.

i always have the last laugh ;)
