Engine not running right
Was out 3am this morning on way to someones house, on motorway car was fine for approx 10 mile, just as i am coming off, car was losing power and juddering, i had to pull out the manual choke in order to keep the revs going, as i was continueing it was spitting and juddering all the way to my friends house, soon as i arrive nearby the car runs sweet and revs kickin so i turn choke off.
For past 3 week the car revs go high and low during the choke process when i run her for about 10 minutes from cold then all of a sudden the revs go really high and car runs sweet again, then i shut off choke.
On way bk home from my friend this morning car pulled and run smooth as a babies bottom as usual.
So today i decided how i would find out what the problem was, then i looked at the exhaust, it was very sooty.
So to see if this was anything to do with it, i cleaned the exhaust tip back to a nice chrome finish and went to big w approx 2 mile run.
when i got back home i noticed slight black splashes appearing on the tip again.
I am thinking of removing the carb and cleaning it to see if this is the problem and some crap has got into the carb from tank.
Would i be correct in doing this and thinking this would correct the problem or should i be looking else where.
I am planning on starting on her 1st thing in morning so any help would be really grateful.
Thank you

Expert? Where? There don't seem to be many small block experts, they all seem to drive the big block stuff, leaving the rest of us to struggle along blindly. Isn't yours a big block derivative?
And a Merry Christmas to you too yeha!
Spreading the joy?

confusing isn't it, 1.3 but big block, thats how they are done in SA.
Well today i removed carb and flange cleaned them down and refitted, no petrol fumes either.
Phil flange was replaced when i bought her bk in april, no bubbles or splits.
Not had chance to set co's as yet as xmas day and its the boys day so didnt want to spoil it for them by working on the car too long.
I will carry on in the morning and take her for a drive, see how she is.
Tupac, mine is fitted with a keihin carb and yes excactly as you have described, even thou its a manual choke the problem is worst during the colder days, they should operate better in colder days than solex and pierburgs, i have a weber on my C 1.6 mk2 and it runs perfect even when really cold, no cut outs or anything.
Also Phil where abouts in salford are you, i know roughly the majority of mk1's floating about the area, a black Y 1.5 which is my friends, my other friend as a Y in a pearlesence colour with porsche alloys, a polish red cabbie, and a black cabbie gti which a women owns, but lately i have noticed a black mk1 on the scene, not you is it?
Ayway will let you know how i get on after tomorrow.
Again merry xmas and best wishes the new year

Mine is a 1.3 big block, notice the air filter housing has one inlet?? there is no hot air feed for our cold winters here so no hot air means carburettor freezing  My GX did this when i took it down the motorway with the hot air pipe missing
The africans didnt expect the citi to be in -5 uk weather
Bert
Oh,if you mess carburettor is a keihin 26-30 DC. idle speed is 950 rpm,co content 1.5%,timing is 5-7 degrees BTDC with vac disconncted.

Your a star fella,
Snap
Where i have put arrow, you mean dont you? if so is there any way of modifing that you know of that could cure this without having to replace the carb etc.
I know yours is locked up and looking gleaming, but mine is used everyday until i get another mk1 to play with.
I was thinking if no hot air is getting to carb, would blowing hot air from an air dryer into filter before starting on cold mornings sort it, just a thought :dontknow:
Co settings etc i have from my haynes so those are sorted.
Cheers bud
Pete

Well here goes, go on have a little chuckle to yourself
Am i stupid or what, bert when i bought the little beaut, there was black extension piping connect to the filter housing and it ran around to the back near exhaust and i though what a tit, why the hell would you want to do that, now i know it was for warm air , well it'll teach me to mess with things hey.
Thats why if you look at my pic of cone part of housing, you'll see a screw where it was connected too
