Higher voltage bulbs? (would this mean a upgraded loom?)
Any help would be greatly appreciated before i drive in to a ditch

Sounds bad if you struggling at 60mph on dip. Not found the standard bulbs that lacking, even if they don't match up to the searchlights fitted on modern cars. Buying more expensive and powerful bulbs will make a difference. Halfords sell several different types of bulbs for most makes of car providing higher levels of beam over the standard spec - obviously the more powerful the more expensive. None of these require the loom or anything else to be upgraded.
Got some for mine (sorry can't remember model or price). Made a noticable difference on dip and full beam.

check the post before this one !! volksacre posted a great web site with the ideal solution to your Dim lights . I have already tried new bulbs lights etc and the only way to cure it by following the tips in the web site . I am going to have single light grill and use twin relays one for the dip and one for the main beam

With a loom in place you will find that even the current bulbs are noticeably better, but you might try some of the "improved" bulbs that Halfords sell, or even some higher wattage bulbs (which can only be used with an uprated loom & relay - you'll burn out the original loom and switch if you try it without) - you can get 80/100w and even 100/130w ones - they are only legal in vehicles made before 1986, but you have a Mk1, so…
